Why Certification Matters and Why We’re Starting Now

Across many industries, certification programs have become a trusted way to demonstrate expertise, build confidence, and accelerate careers. Many people will already be familiar with digital certifications and badges that get shared on LinkedIn, such as the AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner.  Structured certifications have emerged as a powerful way for professionals to stand out, and for organizations to recognize qualified talent more efficiently.

At Velsera, we’ve spent the past year talking with customers, partners, and users about how we can better support the people driving discovery and care. One thing has come up again and again: the need for role-based recognition. Not just training, but clear validation of capability. We’re proud to take our first step in that direction with the launch of our Variant Analyst Level1 Certification, the first in a three-part series designed to recognize and support the professionals interpreting genetic variants in clinical and research settings.

Certifications Build Confidence At Every Level

Whether you’re new to variant interpretation or leading a precision medicine team, certifications offer value beyond the badge. For individuals, they provide structure, clarity, and a sense of progress. For teams, they create a consistent bar of competency, making onboarding and collaboration smoother. For employers, they help de-risk hiring and enable more targeted professional development.

This is why companies like Salesforce, Microsoft, and LinkedIn Learning continue to invest heavily in credentialing programs. According to Credly, 76% of certified professionals report increased job satisfaction, and 28% have received a raise or promotion as a direct result of certification. In diagnostics and life sciences, where staying current with tools, methods, and standards is essential, this kind of assurance becomes even more important.

Velsera’s Approach: Practical, Role-Based, and Expert-Led

We’re starting with the Variant Analyst role because it sits at the intersection of interpretation, clinical decision-making, and bioinformatics. Getting it right has real-world impact; not just for scientific integrity, but for patient care.

Each part of our Variant Analyst certification has been developed by internal subject matter experts and validated with practicing professionals across our customer base. Level1 focuses on foundational knowledge, including variant types, annotation tools, key databases, and general interpretation workflows. Future parts will increase in complexity, covering case evaluation, reporting standards, and emerging technologies.

We’re also using digital credentialing through Credly so that learners can display their achievements in a verifiable, shareable format on LinkedIn, in CVs, or on professional platforms.

What’s Next

Variant Analyst Level 1 is just the beginning. Over the coming months, we’ll expand our certification offerings into other key roles across translational research and clinical genomics. Our goal is to create a connected learning and recognition ecosystem that supports professionals at every stage of their journey.

When we invest in people, we strengthen the science, the outcomes, and the community around us.

If you’re a Variant Analyst ready to showcase your skills, looking to take the next step towards becoming a Variant Analyst, or if you’re just curious, this is the perfect place to start.
